Why a Fur Trapper?
The use of the fur trapper on the badge is meant to invoke curiosity about the history of Mishawaka, Indiana. Native Americans & French Fur Trappers utilized the Saint Joseph River as means of travel & subsistence for years before heavy industry rooted itself in Mishawaka.
The fur trapper badge reminds us that the land around downtown Mishawaka was once a deep forest full of wildlife. Perhaps with a greater awareness towards our history, today as we walk through Central Park or Beutter Park along the Saint Joseph River, we can have a renewed appreciation for the recreation & beauty the land provides.
